Low Self-Esteem

My own story in this regard began at the hand of my grade 7 class teacher and headmaster who most certainly should NOT have been anywhere near a school. I have learnt that inappropriate touching and fondling is deemed as damaging to a child’s psyche as many other more severe forms of sexual abuse. ANY form of abuse or neglect in childhood sows seeds of unworthiness. The protection and safety that should be every child’s basic right when they themselves are defenseless.
High School planted seeds of doubt academically as I struggled with concentration. Yet, my Afrikaans teacher, Ms Inge Filter, bless her and may her soul rest in peace, inspired me to develop my gifts in writing. It was my privilege to send her a copy of my book shortly before she passed away which she appreciated so much.
Low Self-Esteem metastasizes from shame and believing that you are not good enough as you are. It took many years of work and processes and self-education to work my way back up to the light at the end of the tunnel and to be able to feel joyful again.
Any form of abuse or neglect in childhood forms the person to have much lower expectations in what a loving partnership is supposed to be. Choosing dysfunctional relationships and abusive partners are often the result. (Today I am happily married – 20 years and proud of it – after learning how to make healthy choices and believing that I deserve happiness)
It takes courage and determination to take action and make changes. There is nothing wrong with wishing that you changed sooner. Be assured that it is NEVER too late!
We all reach a place where we have to say: “I love and forgive every version of myself that did the best that I could with the awareness that I had then.”
