Many put in a lot of effort to dress up on Saturday and it warmed my heart. Heritage day, we are supposed to celebrate our individual heritage as well as the collective – we are all part of the rainbow nation. I heard of many cultural park festivities and art and culture events but for most it simply means we ‘braai’ and invite friends and family and celebrate the privilege of living in this country. The weather was just perfect here in Ermelo.

The true Heritage of a country should be that we ALL thrive. Not only the 1% but everyone. Basic rights as in: education, health care, clean water and basic services should be something we can take for granted. Sadly at this point in time it is a dismal and embarrassing fail on all counts.

Our emerging young adults, who should be the hope for a better future for all, are of grave concern to me. Evidence of division instead of unity, may it be from a place of dysfunction and indoctrination, can easily slide into extremism….there are many examples all over the world currently and throughout history.

What real hope do our young people really have for a better life in South Africa? Is the entitlement culture being passed along through the current generations? What does growing old in this country hold in store for me? Turning 60 requires facing reality. Despite being in a bracket of the privilege of choice to live elsewhere – we choose to stay – we love this country – we love it’s people across culture and religion – we have this country in our blood.

Cry our beloved country….Cry!

Owning your culture and still being able to be accommodating to that which is different to yours is important. As parents we need to be very aware of our responsibility of sowing seeds of hate in the home environment.

The young adults I work with feel isolated – not valued – not seen – and above all treated like children when in fact, who they are now in personality and attitude, is already the next generation of leaders.

Managing my own anxiety of the future, my life motto is, to do my part – that which I can do and need to take responsibility for - and have trust and faith that we will be guided on the road ahead. ‘Let go and let God’.
