Depression

The downward spiral of depression usually creeps up on us slowly. Most of us simply think we are ‘currently not in a good space’.
Not coping with day to day tasks and avoiding social interaction are some of the signs and symptoms of depression.
Our current situation of uncertainty and the trauma of the past weeks may just be that last drop in the already over stressed and overwhelmed nervous system.
Self-care usually is low on our own priority list – especially with the apathy/listlessness that depression presents.
There are two main categories of people that are so depressed that they contemplate suicide:
One type thinks: ‘ I had a nice life, and if I can just emerge from this terrible crisis e.g. the death of a loved one; extended unemployment as examples – I’ll be ok. But if I can’t … then…..’
The second thinks: ‘my life is empty and pointless, and there’s nothing to look forward to – there is no future. My life is over…’
Then there is a third form of suicide: GIVING UP on life and yourself. Living like a robot – showing up in the flesh but not being present. Plodding along every day - no joy, no plans, no goals. This state of mind usually goes hand in hand with some form of ‘numbing’. Alcohol, drugs, medication, porn and even social media is an addiction that facilitates anesthetizing your mind.
Gradual diminished self-care and self-nurturing results in “feeling dead inside”.
Therapy/Life Coaching requires bravery. Many may think that if they open THAT door it will swallow them whole and they will cope even less. Not true.
Investing in yourself is the most important decision you will ever make. Find your courage and determination to move through the darkest times and change your life.

PARENTS ALERT – suicide is an epidemic in itself amongst our teenagers. The statistics are shocking. Please pay attention to what your children are telling you. They have even less tools and are under extreme pressure at school, especially with the constant interruptions of COVID related closures and instability and uncertainty of their futures.
Reach out – ask for help – you are not alone – many feel the way you do. Our economics, politics, society, poor parenting, poor schooling, home circumstances etc etc are contributing factors. IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT – THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH YOU.
