SELF-RELIANCE

The concept is not about doing everything yourself or being financially independent. It certainly is not about shouldering every hardship you face all on your lonesome. Healthy self-reliance is about developing inner strength and self-trust to live life fully on your own terms. It is about creating order in your inner world so that you can embrace who you are in your individual uniqueness and invest in yourself with compassion, discipline and motivation.

Healthy self-reliance allows you to feel happy when by yourself and like the person you are and supports interpersonal skills – making friends, communicating and have confidence socially.

The ability to think independently and trust your own instincts is often influenced by our formative years and the environment we were exposed to. Society, culture, religion and governments can limit our belief systems and result in either unhealthy self-reliance (isolation and social anxiety) or being totally dependent on being told what to do and what to think/believe.

By investing in myself and doing ‘the inner work’ will build a stronger sense of self-worth, confidence in self-expression, interest in deeper self-knowledge, general life resilience, self-acceptance of my individual imperfections, cultivate self-discipline and accountability for what I contribute to my own life and my environment.

Healthy vs Unhealthy self-reliance examples: feeling confident in your abilities vs being overly confident and not relying on anyone else. Developing skills and knowledge to handle challenges and solve problems vs being stubborn and resistant to change. Seeking out resources and support when facing difficult situations vs isolating yourself and not seeking out social connections.

Unhealthy self-reliance can lead to negative outcomes, including social isolation, mental health problems, and difficulty coping with challenges. This may lead to resistance to seeking help. Extreme self-reliance may result in depression and suicidal ideation. Needing help is not a weakness in fact it is courageous and admirable.

“The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be” Ralph Waldo Emmerson
