Digging for God

(Happy 86th birthday Ma)
This time of year, most of us get the ‘green fingers’ inspiration.
To nurture seeds or seedlings, see them grow and eventually be rewarded with flowers or fruit/vegetables, fills me up and feeds my soul.
My mother and all her sibling sisters were gardening enthusiasts extraordinaire. Even now, pushing her around in her wheelchair for an hour or two until she tires. The highlight of her week is visiting her house and garden for a few house. She misses nothing, giving instructions and finding new inspiration of what changes or addition need to be made.
Her entire life she spent every possible moment in the garden. She landscaped a barren Highveld property into a virtual park. Then as they retired to the Bushveld she systematically created another paradise. Finally she made her special ‘greenfingers Engela’ mark in the retirement village they lived in for 4 years until my father passed away recently.
Plants are moved and grouped and re-planted and moved again. Each garden had the original traditional grounding stones that serve as bird baths. Gardening was her therapy and her creative expression communing with God.
My father, having given up trying to understand this ‘addiction to gardening’, said my mother is not happy unless she is standing head down with her fingers in the soil “digging for God”.
Nature facilitates and enhances the closeness to all creation. Some people find it on long walks in the mountains or on the beach or at a special spot river fishing or out on the ocean deep sea fishing.
When last did you take off your shoes and feel the grass under your feet? When last did you dig into the soil with your bare hands? Make time to appreciate the Spirit of nature during this Spring 2022.
