Finding my Purpose

Many years ago, when I started working with clients as a Life Coach/Therapist, a lady asked me to help her find her purpose in life. I did not really understand PURPOSE then and needed to walk this path myself first in order to discover what the concept really means to me.

Many of us may reach a low point where life does not make sense any longer. Questions of despair may arise. What is the point of it all? Why does God allow all this suffering? There is no Joy in my life – it is just a mundane existence.

Finding your purpose in life requires discovering who you are as a person. All of it – without the sugar coating and the excuses and without judgement of your past. Finding that which you like about yourself and what you are good at and that which comes naturally and easily to you. Only then can you build on the foundation of believing that no matter how small and seemingly insignificant it seems, your contribution does count.

When we find ourselves at a cross-road in life and need to make choices or navigate in a new direction with new life circumstances, it can be confusing. Do I put myself first or do I prioritize others, like my adult children or elderly parents? Taking care of others may have been my perceived purpose in the past.

To find Purpose requires maturity and acceptance of responsibility for your behaviour and your choices. It requires decisiveness with stable mind and clear values, consistency and strength of character and courage to stay true to yourself.

Purpose is not a static thing. It changes and grows and develops throughout life. Your Gifts and Talents and Abilities remain consistent and these are where our focus and self-development must be. This is where we will find peace and gratitude for who we really are. There is only one of you – you are supposed to be You – that is you Purpose.
