Indifference

The opposite of love is not hate but INDIFFERENCE. “Thou shalt not stand idly by….”

We need to participate and contribute to the greater good of humanity especially in our own communities. Every little bit counts – may it be financial, groceries, clothing or seedlings to plant in the community garden or your time to physically help at the centre.

It was during lockdown 2020 when it became apparent how many people live on the streets in Ermelo. The Gift found in a crisis situation = the Lighthouse project, now centre, was founded. There are many earth angels involved who serve those fallen on hard times in person or in support.

LIGHTHOUSE community centre (non-profit under the umbrella of the CMR) is such an inspiration in our Ermelo community and changing peoples’ lives - one person at a time. Being given an opportunity to change your life and to be treated with respect and dignity is all a person may need.

At this centre, with people who are already in the program to be re-habilitated, they are in the process of creating a vegetable garden that many will benefit from. The Lighthouse offers a wholesome nourishing hot meal to many people in need - Monday to Friday between 9h00-15h00 but the need is greater still and your generosity will be appreciated.

The intensity of ‘beggars’ on the street and parking areas and even inside the food supermarkets is becoming disturbing. Even though I feel empathy with the obvious level of desperation I do not appreciate the aggression of some and believe this is not food desperation but addiction. The Lighthouse has social workers that work with addicts and sex workers to support individuals to rehabilitate into society.

The REAL need is employment. JOBS JOBS JOBS – gardening or packers etc. – Lighthouse will give you recommendations of individuals who are employment ready. There are already amazing success stories of second chances and lives that have been turned around. Please contact The Lighthouse if you have any job opportunity, no matter how basic it may be.

Within each one of us resides the need to have self-worth and to be treated with common decency. We need to believe in the goodness of humanity and see the soul within the person that crosses your path to be pointed into the direction of the Lighthouse. It is located in Oosthuize st. with a sign on the palisade fence.

The Lighthouse centre is a not linked to a church and welcomes all.
