Masks

Natural human insecurities, self-doubt and with our individual unique personality characteristics, we all create masks in order to manage in certain areas of our life. We learn these coping mechanisms early in life and some stay with us into adulthood, even though they are no longer needed.
As Hamlet said to Ophelia: “God has given you one face and you make yourself another?” Providing we know our own ‘true face’ – this may not necessarily be a bad thing, although it robs us of living with inner peace as we always have to be vigilant.
To keep track of and not slip up will make for an exhausting life, as along the way you will get lost in the web of deceit, pretense and masks. It will require careful mental notes and check lists to be able to uphold all the masks that you will need to interchange as you go along so that you don’t lose respect and credibility.
As we establish ourselves in the world, we probably take on many masks. We judge ourselves by the reaction we see, hear and feel from others and adjust our ‘faces’ until we feel comfortable with how the world views us, by the reflection we see in the eyes of others.
Just as there are two (or more) sides to every story – there are two (or more) sides to every person.
We need to remember that people wear masks in order to stay safe, to manage other people’s perception of themselves and also because they may feel shame (deserved or not).
Within each of us is the capacity for both good and bad. The part within you that is able to uphold the moral dividing line of truth, your truth, is the true winner.
What would you like to change? What no longer serves a purpose in your every day? What behaviour diminishes your self-worth? Are you a people pleaser?
