My Sorrow - My Teacher

One month short of 88 is considered a long life. The loss of an old parent, regardless of the fact that it can be expected at any time, is still a shock and a big heartache. At the end of May my father passed away suddenly after cardiovascular surgery. I will yet again need to walk the path of grieving. We spoke every day and his death has left a big void in my life. Grief is not a new experience for me but each loss is different.

The concept ‘in the blink of an eye everything changed’, is a reminder to us all to live more mindfully. To be fully present in your everyday. I had the privilege to hug my father really tight one last time, fully aware that I may not see him again. I treasure this memory and have tucked it into a special corner of my heart.

A traumatic and unexpected loss is a very different process of grief as it is not part of the natural cycle of life. Each loss is unique and needs to be embraced and allowed to unfold it its own time and pace. Grief has no time limit and some may never ‘get over’ the loss of a loved one.

After 70 years of service, Queen Elizabeth said: “Each day is a new beginning….I know that the only way to live my life is to try to do what is right, to take the long view, to give of my best in all that the day brings, and to put my trust in Good. Whether we believe in God or not, I think most of us have a sense of the spiritual. That recognition of a deeper meaning of purpose in our lives. I believe that this sense flourishes despite the pressures of the world.”

Grief transcends religions and cultures – our sorrow and our pain is a human experience. It is a personal journey that only you can walk. Doing the ‘work’ facilitates the possibility to get through to the other side of loss and to learn to live alongside loss - to be able to embrace life again - to feel joy again.
