The Value of Choice

This morning I woke up to bird song. Savouring the lull of truck traffic for a few minutes, all I hear is the chatter and twitter of a great variety of birds waking up to a new day in the big tree outside our bedroom window. Gratitude flows into my soul.
As I mature, I have noticed that my hierarchy of values has shifted. It is vitally important to be self-aware and manage self-care according to your needs and values. Doing the same thing the same way year in and year out, means you are sleepwalking through life.
Spending a Sunday morning in bed with my husband drinking coffee and talking, fills me up. Planting a rose that was gifted to me yesterday, which holds immense sentimental value in memory of a loved one, fills me up – these are the things that hold the meaning of love for me.
Today I would like to emphasize GRATITUDE.
My Godmother, who turns 90 in January 2023, is truly an inspiration of what it means to grow old gracefully. She told me this week that the words she says most often, are “Thank you God”.
To have the freedom of choice is an immeasurable privilege. I consciously put effort into choosing to live every day truly awake and in the present moment and with gratitude for my life. Walking to the guesthouse, I looked up at the thick cloudy sky and paused for a minute to watch the play of sunlight behind the clouds. For a few moments I watch what looks like a giant angel. I think of those who have already crossed the rainbow bridge and are missed, yet I consciously choose to feel gratitude for the love they brought into my life instead of sadness.
Listening to a podcast of Oprah telephonically talking to a person who has been on death-row for many years – he speaks the challenge of having NO CHOICE.
Be sure that you are not living in a prison of your own making by the choices you make and by sleep walking through the best years of your life.
